Sidney Lanier finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Sidney Lanier finished eighth in Class 6A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Poets lost as many games as in any season since 2014. The defense was very stingy last season as Sidney Lanier ranked 19th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.8 points a game. Since 2010, Sidney Lanier has gone a combined 41-82. Their 33.3% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sidney Lanier has managed to compile a record of 90-157. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 6A and 314th in the AHSAA. The Poets will be under the direction of new head football coach Derone Fagan as they enter the 2022 season. Coach Fagan comes to the Poets after serving as the head football coach at Carver Birmingham last season. Coach Fagan's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 12-20 (37.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Fagan's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Poets forfeited six games last season after a promising start to the season. They hope to bounce back from that disappointment in 2022. The Sidney Lanier Poets will play in Class 6A region two during the 2022 season. This season, the Poets will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. The Poets open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Lee Montgomery on Saturday, August 20 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Lee Montgomery Generals finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 6A region two. The Generals lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Saraland by a score of 35-6. Sidney Lanier and Lee Montgomery have met a total of 69 times on the football field.
